or more exactly, what is the deiference in the beds? I hear all kinds of rumors about highboy vs normal fleetside beds? I think it's all hogwash but what is the real story? Did ford really make a special bed for such a small aplication! Anyone know? And if it is a special bed, what is so special about it? Can I make a standard fleetside work?
a highboy is a ford f-250 4x4 from 67-77.5 . the frames are narrower on these trucks than some others, so i would guess the mounting holes in the bed would be closer together than other trucks, otherwise i think the beds are the same.

i have a 78 bed on my highboy had to re locate the moutning holes because of the narrower frame but they will work, a little mod and it fits right on.
Hey, thanks Fordfury and everyone else. If I may ask, how much difference did you have to make? In other words will it let me put the new holes in the bottom flat parts of the floor between the ribs or will the holes wind up being up on top of the floor ribs or some other less than nice location?

Just so you know- I definitely know that they continued the High-Boy in into 79, because my dad has one!
Nah the highboys ended in mid 1977. So if its a 79 a lift was probably put on it. It didnt come from the factory that way. Highboys have arched springs in the front as well as back.

78-79 4x4s are referred to as lowboys, i know because that is what my 78 4x4 is, Ford switched to inverted front springs halfway through 77......like 150ford said, someone put different springs on the front....
i have a 78 f-250 with lift blocks in the rear that are factory....so its not a highboy??
nope, my 78 F-250 has the same thing, the "highboy" nickname was given to the pre-mid 77 4x4's for their tall stance of the front suspension from the factory.......
Probably a standard thing the highboys had arched front and back springs that gave them the extra height. Put the two side by side and you would definitly see the difference. A friend off mine has a highboy 1977 model that he still uses. I really like that truck. A friend off mine has a 79. Maybe I could get pictures off the springs for you guys sometime.
here is a pic of my 78 F-250 "lowboy" dont mind the ugly body, its all gonna be replaced soon, note how the front of my truck points down while the Highboy above sits nice and level.....thats due to the inverted front springs they put on my truck from the factory....as for the rear blocks, i have been wondering about them as well.........
