i have a question, since highboys stopped in 77.5(which would be june of 77) were the 78's introduced early that year in july instead of september??? or is there a different model that was made in those couple months??? kinda seems like there is a gap in there............
I always thought it was peculiar that they woulda changed the truck design so much in the middle of a production year. The frame, transfer case and power steering changed to the later 78-79 design, but the front grill stayed with the 76-77 design. Ya gotta wonder.

77.5 is actually closer to January as it refers to the model year not the actual year. Model year production technically begins the first work day after the 4th of July holiday and ends the last workday before the 4th of July holiday. The reality is some plants do changeover at the hioliday while others are still producing the previous years models and the "balance out"(what Ford calls the end of production that needs to be finished, special orders and a few regular production vehicles) may go into August but by mid August all plants are in full production of the next years model. 2. The 79 F150 we just bought had 35 inch tires on it and they were pretty nobby and they didnt rub at all. I dont know if it matters but its a Ranger super cab.
yes that matters a extended cab 4x4 1/2 ton use's leaf spring in the front not coils like the regular cabs now I own 2 of each
2 "highboys"
2 "lowboys"
a few pro and cons of both (of my trucks)
first on the highboy
divoce t-case (easer to change tranny can us a 2wd tranny)
front end love them external locking hubs(mine had warn on them)
frames if you look close on a highboy the frame is almost flat makes easier for flat bed or wrecker bed or mounting
5 th wheel plate
like the look of that bar under the front bumbper
in cab gas tank(I know Im crazy
the low boy
steering
If you offered me ethier truck it would NOT matter if it was a 77 or a 78 all was great trucks the only problem I have with a 78 -79 is the sagging front 2 leaves but it is fixble
as far as 35 fitting on the newer truck folks remimber this
tire actual size (they vary from mfg)
rim width
wheel offspacing
history of truck
are they 15's 16's or 16.5's
my 79 had a 5th wheel all its life and ran all the time through all weather conditions it was so broke down I could not fit 31's on it it sat lower than a 2wd
to see this truck look at my gallery now nobody mistakes it for a 2wd

High boys were made at least up till 3/77. I know this because I have one. My guess is that Ford used the time between the 77 model year and the 77 1/2's to use up the rest of its parts inventory. The Highboys that I have come across have had 6 spring leaf packs in the front with a pretty big acr. Th 77 1/2-79' have 2 springs with a flat to negative arc. If they have more springs than that then they have a heavier duty set up for a snow plow or they are aftermarket springs. The F150 supercabs have the same springs as the F250 of the same year. The highboys sit 2-4" higher than non-highboys from the factory this includes 1/2 tons. They are both great trucks each has its own advantages over the other. As for having block at the rear axle. All the 4x4's have rear blocks. The highboys do have a bigger block than the non-highboys.
Here's a pic of my 76 Hi-boy i put 35's MT's and it has a Warn Classic Front bumper,NP435 4spd and NP205 divorced TCase D44HD Front end with 1ton lockouts and a rare 390 M code 4Barrel
Ronnie appreciate the contribution to FTE. But just like your beer, you should always check the born on date/last reply date on the threads you reply to. MHull posted that in 3-24- 2005...his last FTE activity was 02-10-2012. I am sure he is not going to see your reply.
The threads last entry was 9-20-2005 and then you feed the zombie and woke it up. No problem we all have done it. lol Look at me I am replaying to it.
Me too! Got a kick out of all the back and forth. Especially the obviously wrong comments, along with the corrections.
But I didn't see anyone respond to Justsam's post #23 about his '78 having a 5-leaf positively arched front spring. Guessing his truck was not purchased new, or the dealer had their way with it first.
