I have my 79 f150 ripped apart right now because the pinion bearing took a dump on me, and i have a third member from a 72 f100 i believe and was going to just pop it in to get me another 3 weeks. I believe its a 410 gear ration from the 72, and mine is the normal 355....but i cant get it to go into my rear case. Why? i thought this was the glory of the 9" diff, you can change third members around for different ratio's etc with ease. Can anyone help me out?

yessir, the axle shafts are on the floor, and the studs are perfect...i cant get the mounting surfaces close yet... I cant get the ring gear past the first part of the case....like its too big for the axle housing. Make any sense? i didnt think there would be any difference between the 9" from 72 to my 79...but maybe. thanks for the inquiry man
It sounds like you have the good old 9 1/8 set up which came from some early full size cars. The ring gear is bigger and yes you have to knotch the housing to get it to fit. Does the case have two verticle ribs on it? I am not sure the two rib things is correct or not in identifying the 9 1/8 set up. I think the two ribs are farther apart than the WAR case ribs.
The carrier for the 9 1/8 is different as well. I found this out the hard way. I bought what I thought was a 9 inch trac loc years ago and the 9 inch ring gear would not fit. I am no expert on this subject and that;s about all I can recall. The axle may even be a 9 3/8 set up. I forget the exact fraction of it but it is different than a 9 inch.
well, i thank you boys for the replys. Looks like me and the die grinder are gonna go at it. The axle shafts slip into the carrier, and all that, so i shall try to make it fit, and work for a couple weeks, then chuck it. and make dam sure not to touch the tcase.... 355 vs 410 could be interesting. Hopefully she'll work, it started snowing here, and the stupid mustang wont put up with that crap.
Thanks again guys,
Brian
quick question, if i can get this carrier to fit in my case, will i be able to swap over the yokes on the third member? and how precise do i gotta be tightening it back up? remember, this is just a bandaid for a couple weeks..
The pinion nut should have about 10 to 14 inch Lbs of drag on used bearings. Since this is a qiuck fit just reuse your old crush sleeve but i would never use an old crush sleeve for long term fixes.
As for the pinion nut being the same thread, I have no clue. What I would do is take your old nut from the broken carrier off and see if it will start on the threads of the other, if there's room. I will guess and say that they are the same.
