Hello everyone, I am in the beginning stages of my 1966 pro street F100. Anyone know where I can find more info on how to narrow the frame in the rear? I have found lots of websites that sell complete prostreet rear frame sections, but I wuld like to hear from someone who has done this and can walk me through it. I appreciate the help.
A lot depends on what suspension you want to run. Is it a ladder bar/4-link? Do you just want to narrow it to use a killer tire & still use the leaf springs? I'm getting ready to shorten mine. I was going to 4-link it but the wife says keep it simple... yeah, a twin turbo simple? I do quite a few race cars, if you need help, let me know.
I was going to go with a ladder bar setup with coilovers. THis will be a street cruiser, not a race car. I would like to know how to narrow the rear frame section. You know, where do I cut, where do I weld, etc, etc. I appreciate any help!
No, I haven't purchased anything yet. A lot of performance shops on the internet offer custom narrowed rear frames with the ladder bar setup for around $1000. You mentioned narrowing the frame and keeping the leaf springs, this would be a lot cheaper. What can you tell me about this? I don't think i have seen this setup.
I'm afraid your not going to find a manual on the task but you can accomplish this if you put your mind to it.
I believe you will need to have several things on hand
1. Tires and wheels (to determine axle width when under the bed)
2. Suspension setup (to determine the lenght of frame section to be cut)
3. An assortment of 2x3,2x4,2x6 square tubing (for mocking up the framework)
Anything can be accomplished if you take your time.
How are your welding and fabrication skills?
The biggest thing you'll need is a level surface to do your work. The main think to remember is to strenghthen the areas you section. You might want to consider the rear tire size first. You'd be suprised just how much tire you can get in there if you only section the bed in the wheekwell area. If you can get it all in then lowering it is simple. If not you'll want the rear wheels & tires first. Measure that & let me know. If you still need to section & narrow the frame, I'll get you through it
Drop by the Slick 60's club (do a search for Dane's garage to find it) and page "Garbz". He is building a Pro Street Uni and has the rear frame and axle install pretty much done, I'm sure he can give you some tips and photos.
