Can any math savvy people here recommend any specific Calculus Software programs? I am looking for a nice program that will allow me to plug in an equation and have it solve the equation and explain it to me step by step. I'm in Calculus I now, and plan to go on to Calculus II next semester. Tutors are not always available, so I figure that a thorough Calculus Calculator type program would be very beneficial.
When I took Calculus I, our class used a DOS based software called "Derive". It was easy to use, plus it has graphing capability but it does not list the solutions step by step. If you haven't done so already, I'd check out solution manuals as they do have step by step instructions on solving the problem. Good luck and remember, party hard and study in moderation!
If you use an HP 48-series calculator, I can help out immensely. Otherwise, look for programs such as MathCAD and Mathematica for your PC. You should be able to get student versions of these for under $100. If you have an HP, lemme know and I can send some programs for it that turn the HP into the best solver available.
While taking my first two years of Engineering (in NS Canada), I took Calculus I and II as well as Differential Equations. We used a program called 'Maple' in all three courses. It will allow you to solve equations as well as gragh them in both 2D and 3D.

Thanks Sturzinator, but I'm not using a graphing calculator yet. I don't have an HP graphing calculator. I'm currently only looking for PC Calculus Software.
If it was PC-based software you were looking for, then the MathCAD and Mathematica programs I mentioned are what you need. They're both MS compatible and have windows-type interfaces. Either one will do more than you can imagine. Too bad on the HP though, it's a powerful calculator that comes in handy for double-checking when in doubt (or cases of laziness). For engineers/engineering majors this calculator is a must.
I'm in calc II right now and use a TI-89 for checking all my work. Never used a HP, but I'm sure they are comparable. So far I haven't needed any software, but everyone around here swears by Maple. I've been meaning to get a copy to play around with, but like I said, haven't needed to yet. Whatever you use, make sure you still know how to do all the work by hand. Makes things much easier on you.
