need suggestions for a new computer. Not windows. This dang computer got avirus and it is jamming the heck out of the internet. I want something like a linux or a Mac. I'm damn tired of windows Every 2 years the computer just has a software meltdown. This has happened with every windows Including a 95 ME and XP. I'm sick of it. time fore a change. But where would I find software. All I would do is surf the web and do basic basic imaging aka piantbrush. I'm not into imaging so I don't a big harddrive. I want something that will last longer the 2 years before I have to completely reformatt the hard drive. What would I expect to spend for the software. I have a cousin that is good with computers so between the two of us we could program it. I just need the "brain." All I would need for software is a web browser, a word processor and a basic image editor. I'm not sure about a laptop or a desktop. A desktop would be cheaper. What should I plan to spend.
I just built my mom a system I bought in pieces on Newegg.com. It was like 340 bucks WITH a nice Antec case. Putting it together yourself isn't hard at all. Then, not only does it not come LOADED to the hilt with whatever manufacturers software you buy, but you can load whatever you want on it... ie a free version of linux... Gentoo or something similar. And there ya have it.
AMD 64bit 3200
512 mb ddr 400 ram (Kingston brand)
ASUS A8N-VM CSM Socket 939 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
Seagate 80gb 10,000rpm SATA harddrive
Cheap DVD rom (upgrade to DVD burner if you prefer)
Antec SLK-1650B case (Or cheaper if you don't mind more noise)
20 minutes puttin it together, then load whatever software you wanna run and bingo, a system free of marketing hype.
I feel your pain. Luckily I have not had any problems in a while. Only thing is I start running different programs and it just freezes up. I am wanting a mac pretty bad they are just so dang expensive. I think windows new software is to be out first of the year. And just remember the biggest oxymoron is MICROSOFT WORKS.
i made the "Switch" over to Macintosh in September of '05, I wouldn't exactly count my praises, but I will say I have a very solid iMac G5, I would add that the new laptops do still have some heat issues, but if you know what you are doing, you can take care of it. I've only had the iMac for 11 Months as of Dec 15th, but I am on my second Mac Laptop, I have a MacBook now, had an iBook G4 (the G4 was a very good laptop until I dropped it, then it was in a few pieces). I am about ready to put my MacBook into a few pieces, by excessive force.
The big problem with Apple is that their support can really reek if you don't buy applecare (which is a money maker for them). They won't give you phone support after 90 days if you don't buy applecare, which is a total crock IMO.
I switched to a Mac a year ago and liked it so much I went out and bought another 2 weeks later. What prompted my decision was I bought a new HP for $1100 from circuit city, hooked it to the net and within 2 minutes it was already in a terminal loop and I finally had enough. If you really love the computer, get yourself a Dual core Mac mini for around 8-9 hundred and you wont have any regrets. If you can afford it get an Imac which you will also love. Now when I think of all the time I wasted with Spyware, viruses, crashing, crummy hardware quality, noisy fans, updates and the money it cost me I could kick myself for not going to Mac sooner. An added bonus is I dont feel compelled to buy PCworld or PCmagazine anymore in which every issue has "how to solve PC problems" on the cover. Ive had both my Macs for a year and neither one has given even a moments trouble. Some things in life are worth the extra money and a Mac is one of them.
Are you sure it's a virus and not Windows going blooey and needing re-installation? And why not just wipe the HD and install a Linux OS on it? Much cheaper than buying new hardware.
Ive been using windows xp for a few years now and I never have a rpoblem with it. Now dont get me wrong, i would way rather have a mac or run a linux system, but if you learn how to properly maintain your windows xp, it will do just fine for you! Only reason I havent bought a mac yet, is just cause they are more pricey. As for running a linux system, well just to damn lazy, MS makes everything so easy now a days!
I have been using Windows daily at home and at work for 10 years (Win95, 98, XP) and have never had a problem. Norton anti virus and its sister programs seem to keep things in order..... Im running a bottom of the line Dell at home, Cant see paying all that for a MAC, but I respect those that do, they are fine machines..Im just cheap!

Me and you... Same boat - I'm the exact same way. Couple of add ons (firefox) and don't go to sketchy websites... No problems at all! I'm overdue for a fresh start (reformatting) It's been almost 2.5 years... I usually do it once a year, mainly because I'm a neat freak and I like to get rid of some of the garbage that accumulates over time. But, to each his own.
Windows treats me just fine. The other reason I stick with 'em is for gaming. Try to find all the mainstream games on mac or linux. I'm not going to fight the compatibility issues with windows emulators on linux.

Ya they are high maitaniance to keep them running at the top.
but so are our clasics and wives.
Ya know I never thought about formating her. Now that could be fun.
But then I would have to retrain her. It took 24 years to get her where she is today.
