Taft,
I think it is two Chevy's per side. Or is it two Dodge's? I can't remeber. I honestly don't, but thought you could use a chuckle.

I'm sure you could hang 2 or 3 trucks from them with no problems. Stronger than the truck they are bolted to esp the older one's. forged on my 99. Three bolts could hold 40,000 pounds or so

Interesting question. I bought the two chrome tow hooks to replace the factory black ones and was looking at how to replace them. There are three bolts per hook, and they look like pretty tuff bolts. Then looking at the hooks themselves I would guess you could easily lift the truck off the groud by these hooks alone. Wonder what the real specs are ...

tow hooks

I have read on here that the tow hooks are for being pulled out only.. Due to the way the from differential is you dont really wanna put alot of strain on the front such as in pulling some one in reverse.. just my 2 cents.

Shouldn't be too tough to calculate. You say there are three bolts. Do you have the diameters? Are they bolted directly to the frame or is there a bracket that adapts them to the frame. If there is a bracket, it will make this a bit more difficult. Also, can you give me the thickness of the tow hooks where they are bolted to the frame and the frame thickness where they bolt to the frame.

Like I said they are stronger than the truck they are bolted to..
12 mm i think. !/2 inch where bolted to the truck. Frame and plate is 1/4 inch or so.
The weak point would either be the bolts or where the go through the frame. My calc's give 40- 50k lbs for the bolts , grade 8 and more for the frame to pull straight out. What do you think?

I guess I need to go out and look at mine. If the frame is 1/4", I'm betting that will be the weak link. I suspect it will deform before the bolt shears. I will check it this evening.

91k psi for the bolts for shear. Also the frame would have to pull apart to fail. The frame is 1/8 with another 1/8 plate welded on to it for mounting as far as I remember.
