Everyone I've seen that's 4wd has front tow hooks. My Dad and Uncle and Grandpa all bought new 78 or 79 4wd trucks and they said they came with the front hooks.
I've never seen the hooks on older Fords. Always seem them on Chevys though . . . wonder if there's something to that.
I actually do like the tow hooks from the newer Chevy trucks. You can find them on ebay all the time. I've got no idea what the load rating is on them.
I've never seen them as a stock item either. Could have been a dealer installed option though. As josh79 said, they're usually 10k. Every set I've seen were.
I don't like those little ones though. They're too small for a decent sized tow strap and the retainers are pretty useless. I went to a swap meet and bought some big not-Ford hooks. They're a good 4" across as opposed to the 1 1/2" you get with the little ones.
I put the 88-98 chevy hooks on my truck. I like the fact that they mount flat, but stick out sideways. If you look in my gallery under the hitch pics, you can see them. It took a quick drilling of 4 holes and they were on there. I mounted them behind where the frame bends up to the bumper, that way the bumper isn't going to be hit by what ever I hook to them.
After going round and round with the best place to put tow hooks, I decided to buy a hitch mounted shackle (slides into my 2x2 hitch reciever). Its the screw pin type and is big enough to slip my chain hooks through or the end of my strap. Im in the process of building a new front bumper and it will have a reciever slot in it..Cost around 30 bucks with the shackle...
John, that's what I did. I put the hooks on, and then built the hitch. I left the tow hooks on because they aren't hurting anything, but I like pulling from both framerails at the same time. Also, the hitch really stiffened up the front. Off subject, where in NY are you? I grew up in Randolph, near Jamestown. Also, put some pics on here when you get the chance. I am running a 74 w/33s also
Ted, The other thing I like about the hitch deal is not having to bend over under the truck to hook a chain or strap. Its where you can actually see it..Off the subject...I was just in jamestown last weekend..actually between Jamestown and Bemus point visiting a friend..Im North of Niagara Falls in Lewiston..Will be getting a camera some day and Ill post some pics then, but saving up for a mig now..a guys got to have priorities !
What a good idea to just put a hitch like that on the front end. I bet it stiffened the front end up just a little bit. I might have to think about that one some.
