I'm in the process of purchasing a new 2001 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4L, but I have a few issues with it and I'd like to ask some questions in regards to it, since I can't seem to find one of the problems listed.
The first, main problem, seems to be a sort of vibration or rattling that emits from the passenger side of the engine after the vehicle starts up. This rattling will stay for about half a minute or until the vehicle moves when in gear. It almost feels like a pump is pressurizing something or something along those lines, if that will help anybody with some diagnosis of the problem. Does anybody know what this could be or how much it would cost to repair and if I can do it myself?
The other problem is that the windshield wiper fluid drains out of the unit, signalling some sort of a leak, obviously. I am unable to get the rear-windshield sprayer to function, so I am guessing that the leak is between the reservoir and the rear nozzle. How much is it to fix this problem or how difficult would it be to fix this problem myself?
Im not sure of the Rattle but it could be an EGR valve sticking. As for the fluid leak there is a hose union on the passenger side of the expy that comes loose all the time ive fixed mine like 4 times now. Its real easy to get too and takes about 5 min.
I just located a person who seems to be experiencing the same exact issue with another thread search. It seems that it is possibly an LLS pump underneath the windshield wiper reservoir that may be doing it, and it may, in fact, be normal. What is the possibility of that vs. the EGR valve? It does sound a lot like an air pump sort of sound/vibration. It does stop on it's own after a about 30 seconds or less.
Also, where can I locate this union for the windshield wiper system? What do I need to remove and where to locate it?
The union is on the passenger side of the vehicle. In front of your passenger door on the inside there is a molding that has to be removed. When the molding is removed you will see a clear hose about 1/4 inch in diameter. Follow the hose toward the rear of the vehicle until you come across a black rubber union probably 3 inches long that is the one that likes to come loose. As for the EGR that was kind of an educated guess because it would cause the engine to "rattle".
