Loud vibrating/rattle noise??

i have a 2001 sport trac... i have this annoying LOUD vibrating rattle noise that is coming from somewhere in my dashboard.. maybe from behind the radio or something.. this only happens when i am in GEAR but i am at a complete stop... the sound goes away when i accelerate or if i am in park or neutral... can some1 help me with this problem...

I don't know if it is the same but on my 2002 sporttrac I had a rattle that was driving me crazy. It sounded like it was at the top of my windshield but ended up being the plastic grill on the outside at the bottom of the windshield. Evidently the sound was traveling up the glass making it sound as if the noise was at the top. The fix- put a piece of felt between the plastic pcs. Hope it helps.

is there a way to just pop off the plastic vents? or do i just wedge it in there b/c i think thats where the sound might be coming from now that i think of it...

Unless I am mistaken, there is a few screws and might even be a clip under the screws. But you don't need to take it all the way off. Just enough to get the felt under the plastic. I had this back to the dealer so many times for this same problem and then my son figured it out on one of our many test drives. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll see if he can remember how he took it apart.

ok im goin to try to do it tomorrow but i have been listening to it again but i dont think its the vents at the bottom of the windshield now... but i will try your felt idea 1st and see if that works...

this may be a new location for this rattle noise...its not coming from the inside i dont think....i can feel the vibration through the windshield and i got out of my truck and was listening to the sound and it sounded like it was coming from underneath the black vents on my hood where the windsheild wipers are located... so can you or anyone help me now....

It sounds like your noise is just about where mine was finally located. It's these black vents where my noise was coming from. I think they seperate in the middle of the windshield and that's where we put the felt and the noise stopped. We spent many hours driving around and trying everything. They even replaced the windshield but it ended up being the black plastic making the noise.
