Hey--i've looked thru the posts on the sight about some rattling in my 2000 Explorer 4.0SOHC. I replaced the Idler Air Control cause it was easy and some said this might fix the problem but it didnt. Most everyone said that the timing chain noise is most prevlant at 2000 -3000 rpm's. Well I am really only hearing a noise on startup for about 30 secs - 1 minute and have only noticed it when the engine is slightly warm i.e. i drove for an hour or so then let the car sit for 10 - 15 min then start it up again. I have never noticed it when it has been completely cold. Also, after replacing my idler air control and had the hood open and engine cover off it seems like i hear a little bit of vacuum leak but not sure if that is normal since I can't find where it would be coming from. I would really appreciate any help. And also, my check engine light .. the code is lean on bank 1. Maybe the IAC fixed it but I haven't reset the light yet so I don't know. Thanks
There is an extended coverage on the timing chain tensioner for certain years. I believe the coverage is 6 years or 75,000 miles. This tensioner usually causes a start up rattle. The kit also includes new intake gaskets. If you post your vin somebody could check it to see if your's is covered.
You are correct about the timing chain tensioner but I could hear mine at 1200-3000 rpm. The other problem at startup could be the other timing chain. Apparently this engine has 3. The tensioner is one problem, the chain guides etc could be the one you are hearing in the front drivers side. Just 2 weeks ago they replaced mine under warranty (the last week). You must strip out the front of the engine to access it.
Well I took the truck in and they said there was an owner notification on the timing tensionor and the intake gasket. So they said they did the recall. Well the truck is still doing the exact same thing. It's getting colder here and now the truck barely runs until it warms up so I am not sure what the problem is and I still hear the rattling. I looked under the hood and the engine is fairly dirty...i can't see anywhere that it looks like they worked on it cause its all still dirty but they told me they did. I'm having to hold down on the gas at about 3000 rpm's now for about 5 minutes till the engine gets warm before i can drive it...any help? thanks
You probably wont notice the Timing Chain Tensioner & Manifold gasket job because they don't have to dismantle the engine. There's a small access where they change the tensioner on top of the motor towards the right hand side of the fan shroud. For the idle, I'll check around with my mechanic who has all the diagnostics you can imagine. Have a good Christmas.
No. It should not make any noise at all. I had mine done about a month age, and immediately noticed what I thought was the same rattle. They kept my truck for 3 days and were about to give it back to me. I said no I didn't want it (because my warranty had expired that day), and told them to park it outside overnight and then try it in the morning. We had had very mild temperatures, and fortunately that night turned cold. As soon as they started it in the morning they heard it too. When they heard the rattle, they discerned it to be coming from the front of the engine and had to stip down the front to get at the chain and replace the chain guides, chain etc.
