Hi i have a 1989 f250 7.3 idi and i have a horrible rattle coming from the clutch. My rear seal has started to leak so i figuered while i have my transmission out i should fix the rattle. The clutch thats in it has no more than 2500 miles on it the only thing i can figure thats causing my problem is the clutch realese bearing (throw out bearing) if anyone could help it would be well appreciated. thanks
well the wierd thing is the only time it rattles is when sitting at idle if you keep it at or above 500 rpms it stops. it also stops rattling when the truck is in gear with the clutch barely ingaged.
An easy way to tell if its the flywheel is to listen when you shut the truck off, it will kinda rattle a couple times as the two halves bounce off each other. Otherwise you need to take the inspection cover off and check for play. If you can move the flywheel without seeing the clutch rotate chances are its worn out or has springs missing. The "service limit" is 5/8" but they can move alot more if its bad enough.
i just went outside and checked the fly wheel threw the inspection pan witch i already remove do to oil from the rear main seal leaking oil and i couldnt feel any play at all by what ive found from doing reshearch the throw out bearing has two clips on it and i was wondering if one of the clips brock causing it to rattle at low rpms

Do you know if the flywheel has been replaced? If someone has converted the truck to a single mass flywheel, you may be hearing gear roll over, that some get after doing the conversion. Some have reported these same symtems after installing a SMF. Over filling the tranny with fluid by a qt. or so helps to quiet the gear roll over.
I went back out this morning and checked again for play in the flywheel i could not fill any but i found that the springs where really loose im guessing that this is my problem
Hey this is an old thread but did you ever figure out problem. My 97 7.3 5speed Powerstroke does same thing. Rattles real bad unless it's idling at little over 500 rpm. Goes away if I touch throttle or depress clutch.
