I'm trying to replace front rotors on a 96 f250 4wd powerstroke diesel. How do you get the old ones off? I've removed the calipers and caliper mounting brackets. Do I hsve to open the hub, and pull it off to get at the rotor?
you have to take the hub off, get a ford 4x4 hub socket to remove the retaining ring and take it all apart. at least that is the way it was on my '95 bronco and i am pretty sure they used the same type of set up on your truck

I think they're just rusted onto the hub. You have to free it up with a lot of Free-All or PB Blaster. If you have the facilities what works the best is get an air chisle with a blunt end or top hat shaped and rattle it between the lug studs. It usually only take a few seconds of that and it pops off. No compressed air? Get a long piece of steel stock, a large hammer and go at it manually. If you are going to throw the rotors away you can bang it from the backside where the caliper bolts up while rotating the wheel. Protect your eyes AND your hearing, it will make your ears ring for quite a while.
nah gotta take the hubs down to get them off the rotors have to go tward the truck to get the hub adapters off. should be repacking the wheel bearings while your doing brakes anyway. dependant on how many miles it would probable be a good idea to do bearings and wheel seals while your in there.
tearing into the hubs. remove the 3 screws, pull the end cap off. there is a retaining ring you need to get out a strait pick and a pick with the 90 degree end work great for that then the assymbly will pull out. putting the screws for the end cap back in work great for someting to hold onto to get them out. then ya need that wheel bearing socket. spin the nut off. pull the washer out, spin next nut off and the rotor, hub adapeter will come right off then.
drive out wheel studs and then you can take a big hammer and work that hub adapter off. use lots of antisieze on it when your reassymbling.
yeah your tellin me kwik, NO ANTISIEZE in the ones im removing too. need a bigger frikin hammer. that spindle is still kicking my butt. need new disc shield on one side now. might need a spindle soon too.
Thanks for the help. Got the first one off and back together. When I went to do the other side, I couldn't get the assembly out. I took the cover off, and got the retaining ring out, but cannot get the guts to come out. I tried pulling them with the 3 screws, heating the hub assembly, beating the hub with a 3 lb hammer, and used lots of solvent, but can't get them out. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
ive gotten some screws from the parts store that fit and then some big washers and used a harmonic balancer puller to get them out before. even drilled and tapped one for 3/8 hardware and used that to yank the sob out. i would do that before torchin it out of there.
