Iv'e got a 93 F250 with the 4.9 inline six that I put together with the best parts from two motors. My question is this: I have both styles of power steering pumps available to put on it. The older style with the diamond shaped resevoir with the filler cap on top,,,and the newer style with the large diameter filler tube that basically is the resevoir. Which one to use? Which is the more reliable? I have talked to some local guys here that are pretty adament that the older version is the way to go, Im leaning toward the newer version. Any comments or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Reason: spelling of course
Dear writer,
Those gear pumps on the older models are a lot like the oil pumps on a General Electric CJ-610c engine in that they never quit working, and also make that cool wizzing sound like when you firewall the trottles at take off. Only thing is they don't keep constant pressure at the various engine rpms like the oil pumps on the CJ will. My advice to you would be to never substitute a non FAA-PMA appoved part on an aircraft turbojet-engine anyway, especially something as critical as an OIL PUMP!!
Good luck,

Stay with the "Canned Ham style Saginaw" as GeneStoner calls it. They are known to last longer and not whine like the plastic newer style. I have been through 2 new styles in 5 years and never replaced the Saginaw that did not have 200K + mles.
Thanks for the feedback guys,,,put the old style on and its got a pretty massive leak around the big fitting that screws into the resevoir. Should I try to find a fitting (Murrays Auto Parts doesnt stock it) or just throw the newer style on. Im looking to avoid hassles in the futer once I get this truck on the road.
Anyone happen to know which type pump is supposed to drag less, as in take less power? Also, do the newer pumps need serpentine belt, or can I get em to work with a V belt? (I have three ring damper, so am all set in that area)
If you have a conventional V-belt damper, you will probably want to go with the same on the PS pump, right? What do you mean by "newer" pumps? New as in "Brand New" or new-style?
What years would have had the "saginaw pump"? I pulled up pumps for a 70 F100 and they don't look like a "canned ham" at all. By 1970, the steering box itself was saginaw. The pumps and gears were reasonable enough -- remaned from cardone was like 50 plus 30 core charge for the pump and 140 plus 50 core for the gear.
