First of all I'd like to say that this is an excellent BB. There's alot of good scoop here, just wish I'd found it earlier. Anyway, on to the dilema. I've been trying to figure out just what is causing my 1993 F150, with the 302 and the E4OD trans. It has a constant sputtering at all RPM ranges. It's coming from the left bank. It almost sounds like a bad exhaust o-ring or manifold gasket, but I'm not convinced it's this. It just doesn't seem to be load enough of a noise to be that. I'm thinking it's a bad lifter/cam lobe, or injector. Performance of the truck is still good even with this sputtering noise. It just sounds really bad. I've already replaced the timing gear and chain set, conducted a compression check (good), all plugs look good and the distributer and wires look good. The truck has 149K and is running with JBA shorties w/ a Gibson cat-back exhaust and the Banks trans-command. I went to NAPA the other day and was told that their computer is calling for a roller cam & lifters. This kind of suprised me, it's a truck! Not a Mustang! I was thinking of putting a roller cam in there, if it is the problem, but I didn't think it came stock! TIA - Art
have the same problem with my 93 v-6 have taken it to 3 mechanics and have received 3 different responses.i'm taking my truck to a specialist monday.... i will let you know.
I believe they were right about truck having a roller cam.
As far as the sputtering, could it be a bad exhaust gasket? Or does your truck have an O2 sensor on both sides of the exhaust pipe coming from the engine down to the cats?
It ould be several things, mostly try the easy & simple things first. Once you have those eliminated you can move on. Also, does your truck have mass air? It could be as simple as a dirty mass air sensor.

1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.
Hi, I read somewhere that all 302s after 1985 were roller engines don't know if its true but I did read it somewhere check the firing order if it is a roller engine the firing order will be the same as a 351. John
fatforty-I have a 1986 302 out of a lincoln mark vii. It is a non-HO and has a roller cam with the regular 302 firing order. Maybe only HO had the 351w firing order?
My neighbour had a similar problem with his 87 351, turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold. The crack was barely visible even when the manifold was removed and if it is cracked on the backside you would never know. check it out.
since you say it runs perfectly fine, my bet would be on a bad exhaust gasket or maybe a leaking header collector. headers are notorious for poor sealing qualities. to have an exhaust leak it doesnt have to necessarily be really loud. i had a tiny chunk of exhaust manifold gasket blow out and at first i couldve sworn it was a bad lifter. you probably wont be able to see if its that just by looking at it. is the sound present at idle? if so then pop the hood while its running and track the sound down, crawl way in there if need be.
