I have an 88 Bronco with a 302. It has two catalytic converters on it as well. My question is does each one have an O2 sensor on it? And is it possible to eliminate one or both of them without screwing up a map sensor or performance? I do not have emission test so that is not a consern.
My 89 has two cat. I would assume yours and mine are the same. You only have one sensor. To do away with it you might want to refer to the Exhaust fourm. I have seen them talking about this very question and I beleive there is a way to do it.
The twin cat setup can be replaced with a single unit. For better exhaust flow consider I high flow unit. You cannot remove a functioning catalytic converter from any vehicle that has one as original equipment. You can ONLY replce it. Not my rules, Uncle Sam's. You can combine the twin setup into one since modern catalytic converters are efficient enough to accomplish the same "scrubbing" that the OEM twin setup performed. If the vehicle will not be operated on public streets and highways EVER, then you can run without the cat all together.
The O2 sensor is mounted in front of the cat(s) in the Y-pipe and cannot be removed or bypassed. The O2 sensor is necessary for providing the EEC computer with information so it can maintain fuel/air mixture, spark timing, idle control, etc.
