OK guys, I tried to start my truck this morning, and it wouldn't do a thing with the tranny in park. I could hear the solenoid clicking, but that's it. I shifted to neutral, and it fired right up. Does this sound like a neutral safety switch issue? Can they be adjusted? What is involved?
My truck does this all the time. The solenoid does not actually click, but the radio and accessories go out. I have to find the "sweet" spot in park or neutral so that she will crank. I have been meaning to adj. the switch which is located on the steering column near the fire wall but I don't want to lay down on the wet/salty/snow filled dirty floor matts ! If winter ever ends up here I'll clean up the truck and get er done.
You may be right. . .the solenoid is not actually clicking, but the radio, cb, etc do die when I try to crank it in park.
I looked up the part on AdvanceAuto.com, and it certainly appears to be something that would attach to the steering column. However, looking at it in my Chilton's. . .wow! Very different animal. At least it still cranks in neutral. Thanks for the help guys.
The neutral safety switch was moved from the column to the transmission starting in 1978. I have a '78 and it is indeed located on the transmission. National Parts Depot sells a replacement, not original Ford, for about $60.
