What model year started having computers?

My son has decided to get a truck similar to mine, but we want to stay pre-computer. In what model year did the computer appear?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

It depends on the engine , For the 300 cu in engines 1987 was the first yr Efi was used . For the V8 's I believe 1985 was the first yr for Efi .

Wasn't there a period where the trucks came with a computer controlled carb? If so, when was that?

85 and 86 F150's with the 300 I6 had computer controlled carbs, worked great when new/newly rebuilt but all it takes is a little fine dirt in the gas to screw them up and then they're worse then a poor conventional carb.

LAST EDITED ON 06-May-01 AT 05:39 PM (EST)[p]I know the official year for efi on the 300 was 1987, but I believe they came out earlier in 1986. I have a good friend who has a 1986 F-150 with the 300 and it is fuel injected.

I've seen several trucks with the EECIV and a single barrel carb. Looks like quite a pain to deal with tuning.
302 was 1985.
351 was 1988 as was 460.

1984 was the first year Ford put EEC-IV in its vehicles. I'm not sure if any other engines besides the 300 had feedback carbs?

I know my 83 F150 had the Duraspark 3. Is that the equivalent to the EECIII?
