rear main seal

I had the motor in my truck replaced last september, it is a 302, now rear main seal seems to be leaking occasionally. It doesn't always leak, in fact i have only seen it once, but when i step on the gas, i smell oil, and my oil pressure has been going way down, and then back to normal lately. Is this common on 302's, and does it sound like a rear main seal since it only leaks occasionally. i have a short trail of oil down the back of my oil pan and it looks like it is coming from in between the motor and the tranny. Thanks for hte help.

The rear main seal in my 93 F-150 302 is also leaking occasionally. Especially when I've ran it on the highway for periods of time. I still have yet to add any between changes. It's kinda expensive, so I wouldn't do anything till it runs out. MY 2 cents

Shawn, It does sound like a rear seal. Have you checked your oil pressure sending unit? I had a truck one time have the sending unit go bad. Not only did it give false and bogus readings, it also leaked big time. I am not sure where you sender is positioned but the one that I had was positioned in a way that the oil would travel to the rear of the engine before dripping to the ground. Just a thought. Good luck.
