2002 7.3 Trans Problem
The wife's 2002 7.3L Ex has "slammed into gear so hard I think I have whiplash". She said this happened around 50mph. The truck also stalled out while at a long stoplight. The truck has 43k miles on it. I changed the filter and fluid last night, she just called and said it slammed into gear again today. The fluid was clear red, like new, the filter did not appear to be completely plugged (I tore it apart to see) so I only change the fluid in the pan, didn't flush it. I drove the truck for about 20miles after changing the filter and fluid last night, no problem. Anyone have any thoughts?

Why didn't you flush it? Changing what's in the pan changes less than half of the fluid. Seems like a waste of time and money to me.
My geuss is that either it's low on fluid, or the filter isn't seated properly. That will allow the pump to suck air once in a while causing the bad shifts as the trans loses and regains oil pressure.

Didn't flush it because the fluid in the pan was clear and red and smelled fine. I know the filter was installed correctly, and the fluid level is correct, that's why I do my own maintenance. Since she's had the same problem before and after the filter change now I'm wondering if its the infamous cam position sensor starting to fail? This weekend I'll be driving it some, so I can see first hand what's going on.
