Anyone know of a cheap source for a new flywheel? LMC, has these listed in an old Catalog for 139$, but shiping my be high. I can get one locally for 175 plus tax. Or, I can get one out of state for 150 plus shiping. I would also, like to know the original thickness of the flywheel, and the bolt heads. Does anyone, know how much a flywheel can be cut down, before it has to be scraped? I've been considering, having a 391 flywheel rebalanced and using it, as I think these use a bigger clutch. I've got 4 flywheels, and every one has heat cracks. one clear to the center.
64, can't you find one at a salvage yard ? Or just keep cutting on the ones you have, I haven't seen any FE 'wheels that were so badly cracked they wouldn't clean up. I'll try to measure one and see how thick they are. What size clutch are you using now ? An eleven and a twelve inch will fit the normal 'wheels. The 391FT wheel is slightly bigger in diameter, and weighs 40 pounds, so that isn't going to help you. But they do have a 13 clutch. What are you doing that is killing clutches ? DF
So far, I haven't found any good flywheels around here. The one in my truck, had been bathed in oil, for some time, owing to a very bad crank, in the previous engine. The other 3 flywheels, came with various trades and engines, and trucks I had purchased. The one in my truck, was cracked clear to the center. I've never seen one that bad before. I did buy one off Evilbay, but it just barely cleaned up before getting to the bottom of the worn out indicator. So it will be junk by the next time, I need a clutch, I would guess. These are 11 inch clutches. I may try for an 11.5 inch, next time. FE stuff is getting hard to find around here. Junkyards, want an arm and a leg, unless you go to the upullit, which is 50 miles away. Frankly, there just aren't that many manual trannies showing up in the yards, in recent years. Besides, you have to pull everything, to get to the flywheel. I've got the problem cured for the moment, but I will stock up for the future. Auto Zone is selling rebuilt ones for 44.95. I may just buy one of theirs, and check it out. First time, I've heard of a rebuilt flywheel, being sold. 80$ core charge, got plenty junk, to give them.
Just bought one for my 390 @ Auto Zone for $54.00 +$85.00 core charge. I had the core so it cost me the $54. That included the ring gear. check out their website to see if they carry one for your application.

HD, apparently you had no complaints, or you would have mentioned those. I would like to know what they do to the flywheels, to call these rebuilt. They don't actually list thses for 66 F100's, but start in about 1970, which should fit just fine. How would you describe, what they provided?
It looked like it had been turned and cleaned w/ a new ring gear. Actually, I was impressed for the price. For the price I had no complaints. It was cheaper than I could have had my old one turned and checked plus a new ring gear. Mine had a 1 year warranty and I believe that any problems with the flywheel would show well before 1 year.
I am sure you know this but be sure to clean the protective coating off of the surface when you put it on.
Also, the one I got was the 184 tooth wheel, some are 188. Make sure you get the right one. The people at autozone couldn't tell which one I was ordering, I just got lucky and got the right one the first time.
Thanks HD, for the heads up. I had already bought the one on Evilbay, before, I heard about Auto Zone having the flywheels. Cost me more by the time I had it sent to me, and it was surfaced, plus, I had to clean it up, and reverse the ring gear. Not nearly as good a deal as what you got. I'll most likely get one from Auto Zone later, and put it away, as the one I did get doesn't look like it will take another turning. Then again, I've been thinking of getting a four speed car toploader, and doing some gear jamming, might want a little more clutch than the eleven inch. Then again, with the price of gas, an overdrive is looking pretty good. I've got one for the 66, but that means no heavy foot. 390 and heavy foot, makes tranny go way.
Guess, if I was to much worried about gas, I wouldn't be driving something with a 390 in it. Be looking at a Hybrid. Actually, allways thought it would be pleasant to drive a horse and buggy. Just don't think I want something else, to clean up after, and take care of. Prolly aught to have stuck to the 352, and no cam, no headers, and cut off 6 inches of my right foot. Maybe, if I stick a couple sand burrs, in my right shoe, while driving, gas mileage would improve. Sure would make it hard to heel and toe, in the corners though.
