1999 Ranger Spare Key Problems
Today I tried to use a spare key Walmart made for my 1999 Ranger XLT. It will unlock the doors but it won't actually start the pickup. When I put the key in the ignition, the key would turn but it would not start the ignition. Does anyone know if these use special keys? Comparing the spare vs. the original key, there is no distinct difference. Has anyone encountered this problem before? It looks like a normal key with no security features on the key. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

You need a PATS key with the chip from the dealer or locksmith. Or you can order them online (such as eBay) and have them cut at Walmart. If you have only one key, you'll have to have the new key programmed by the dealer or locksmith. If you already have two preprogrammed keys, you can program the third one yourself. Usually about 60-100 bucks to program a key.
