I have a 2000 f150 xlt and was wondering has anybody had a new ignition key cut for these trucks with the computer coded key?
i have heard its about $100 a key is this true?
i have a non coded key cut just to have a spare door key, have hasd to use a coat hanger one too many times to get in thanks to friends, and it won't start the truck had to try it ya know. wanted to see what it would do. will only crank over will not fire.
I hear that a locksmith is under $40. When I bought my truck,it only had one key. The dealer made me a new one for free, I asked the cashier how much that it would have cost me if I had to buy it and she said $79. OUCH!!

The key cost one price. Coding it is extra. The truck's manual clearly describes the coding process - but you MUST have two coded keys to do it yourself. I believe you can code up to eight keys.
Believe it or not, (and I do have the receipt to prove it) I did get both the key and coding for that price. Maybe some one screwed up. I only had 1 key when they changed my instrument cluster, and they had to have 2 keys to do that. They first had to code the new one the same as the old one, then re-code both keys again. Apparently it has something to do with Ford's security system.
I know, I know, sounds impossible doesn't it. But it might be the same one who forgot to book a wheel alignment for my truck after the front end work that was done. Imagine my surprise when after waiting a week for my truck, to be told " the mechanic recommends a wheel alignment". What part of "replace anything that could have been damaged, and would it be possible to center the steering wheel at the same time you do the wheel alignment" did the service advisor not understand. Aaaaarrrrgggg. However he did give me a tire gauge and a ice scraper. I guess I'll see you Saturday. And please tell the cashiers, as lovely as they are, I'm not really stalking them just because I'm there almost every weekend. Does the service advisor even talk to you guys that actually do the work?
Sometimes the communication between the service advisors and techs is really bad
They usually have too many things on the go at the same time and forget things. Maybe they should start writing things down. Wow...what a novel idea!
From reading on www.flatratetech.com and other places it sounds like that is a problem that most shops have. It does drive us nuts sometimes.

They probably changed the code when they recoded both keys. That way the lost or missing key couldn't be found and used to make off with your truck.
I stopped at the dealership yesterday and they told me it was going to $120 to get a new key. I love Ford but i am about to go trade it in on a chevy cause seems like anymore its way to expensive to do anything to a ford. hell i can still remember the day when a new key for a ford would run you $0.99 not $99 oh well i guess will have to live with one.
bought my '03 Supercrew last weekend. My salesman suggested the purchase of an extra key (because you need 2 keys to reprogram as stated above). The new key only cost 14.99, and the programming (per the manual) was easy.
