Mabye someone can help me?When i got my 96 ranger ext cab 4x4 4.0 automatic my over drive off light came on as soon as i started the truck and stayed on until i shut it down. After about 2 years I changed the battery and now the light is gone ! but i can turn it on and off by the shifter my question is should it be on or off when i start the truck or did something get screwed up in the computer when i changed the battery.
If you can still control the OD on/off function I'm thinking the bulb blew out. The OD light on my 2000 never comes on except when I have the OD off. If you confirm the bulb is good and either the light doesn't work anymore or it's back on all the time I would go to a local parts store and get them to pull the codes for free.
The light works fine the question i have is that when i got the truck it was on as soon as i started the truck (so that means no od ) I changed the battery and now the light is off and i guess im running in overdrive all the time. why would changing the battery flip the overdrive around like that? I do alot of highway driving so should i be running in overdrive all the time.
Thanks
Steve

I think the owner's manuals in my old 99 Ranger that I no longer have =( and my Explorer say overdrive is usually preferred ("for best fuel economy"). "Off" might be used when driving with heavy loads, towing, or additonal engine braking.
At least thats what the manual says. I always left it on.
Here's one way out of left field. You say the light was on at startup before you changed the battery? Quite possibly, someone may have programmed your transmission that way. The fact that you changed (disconnected) the battery would have reset the computer.
I programmed my seatbelt dinger to stay off. I have no idea if disconnecting the battery will reset it to start dinging again.
Anyways, my truck at startup has the "O/D off" light not illuminated.
Overdrive is turned on by default but the light only is supposed to come on when you turn the overdrive off. However, the overdrive light will come on and start flashing (wasn't mentioned if the light was flashing in the original post) when there is a problem with the transmission. Disconnecting the battery then reconnecting resets the system. Sounds like it's working properly now.
