just started tonight....(02 f350 sd).started up truck and heard a whining from under the hood. Not a belt whining but sometind else. Have no idea what it could be. I checked all the fluids (tranny, break, power steering) all full and clean. I washed the truck down the other day and sprayed the sand and salt out from under the hood. I plow with this truck, but have it serviced after every storm. Any ideas??????? It seems to be at the loudest at start up, and diminishes as I accelerate.....
i went out and sprayed some areas with wd40 but it didnt quiet anything. seems to be the loudest around the alternator. just started tonight?
if it was the alternator, is this the warning before it craps out?

As a hip shot, I'd say an idler pulley or alternator. r0n1n might have something with the PCV boot as well. It wouldn't be the first time I saw that happen.
Cowboy may have it. Take the belt off and spin the idler and the alt they should make no noise I'm betting on the idler bearing, I had to replace mine last year. Just the bearing. Also for the alt you can get the bearings replaced if thats what it is.
You guys are all crazy, I'm pretty sure you just forgot about that Super Charger that you installed last week, lol. Just take the drive belt off of your super charger pully and the noise will stop, probloem solved. Alright more seriously - I agree with the rest check those accesorie components, ie alternator, power steering pump ect.... As far as doing a check use a poor mans stethascope (just a peice of hose) start the truck and route the hose around untill you find the area that it is coming from. If its the Idler pully or the alternator just pop off your belt and give them a spin, you'll probably be able to feel/hear the roughness in the bearings. Good Luck
