I just bought it. When I brought it home I noticed the fuel pump is loud. Real loud! I can hear it even when I'm driving. It's not making strange noises, sounds like a fuel pump should sound, but just much louder. Is this an indication that the pump is about to die? I'm wondering if I should replace it right away or wait it out and see if it quiets down.
It was on the dealer's lot for a good 6 months. I noticed when I was shopping that none of the dealers ever put more than $5 worth of gas in their cars and let people test drive them running on fumes. It would make sense that the pump took some abuse during this time.
Ford fuel pumps tend to die slowly rather than quickly. If it starts getting hard to start or bogs at WOT, then you can check the pressure as part of your troubleshooting. I wouldn't pro-actively change the pump, though. They're pricy to do, even if you do it yourself.
I just replaced the front pump in my 93. I got it off ebay. The guy gave me the reciept for it. It was only a month and a half old. It's about 10 times louder than my original.I know the pump in my 5.0 was pretty loud too,but I never had any trouble. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

i totaly agree with that, it is one of my favorite phrases along with measure twice and cut once.
mine makes a real loud noise when i start it but that is it, it has never showed signs of failing yet.
My E150 (1992 w/351) had a loud fuel pump when I bought it in 2000. It didn't actually quit working until late last year. $165 and an hour later we had it back in and running... With new exhaust sytem too.. Man that thing sounds sweet with just a straight pipe (and cats).
Hey Guys, thanks for the input! It runs fine so I'll take the wait and see approach. Good to know they tend die slow rather than suddenly puke on the highway.
