I have a 99 F350. For three years in a row, I have had leaf springs break. This year, rear driver side, a middle spring broke and went flying down the road. Last year, rear passenger side, two middle springs broke. The year before, driver side rear, middle spring broke.
I do not pull or carry heavy loads. A horse trailor once in a while, and my camper once or twice a year. Is this typical.
no...not really unless the truck is being abused... are you chipped or anything that might be putting high stress on the springs? Go fast over bumps etc? When you replace are you replacing the whole pack? If so good quality or cheap?
Something's wrong. You shouldn't be breaking springs like that. Bad spings from the factory ( dosen't sound right ), or the truck has been beaten. Are you the original owner?
I had the same problem a couple years ago on my 99 F-250. Found some rear springs from an 01 at a salvage yard and haven't had a problem yet. My driving habits are about the same as they were when i broke the springs. I thought it was weird until I made a unrelated stop at a spring company in Portland. I asked the guy behind the counter if he had heard of my problem, and to my suprize there were a couple of 99 F250s and 350s in the shop at that time with broken leafs.... Must be the frost heaves back here?
the old time truck drivers tell me that ford at one time had the strongest leaf springs, they almost never broke. This untill i had to replace both rear springs packs on my 99, f-350. I drive over a gravel drive to work everyday so i think when the driveway was a washboard in conjuction with cold weather broke mine. The replacement for both was about $100 each spring pack, from a local spring shop (ford stampings) in the springs. Alot cheaper than getting from the local dealer! When my truck was new i hauled a trailer everyday and never had a problem with the springs
I had a 99 F350 SRW and I had a front driver side spring break. Both springs broke all the way through right were the little positioning bolt goes through.
I am chiped and some other mods, but I do not "abuse" the truck by any means. I drive moderately, cause I want it to last for another 300,000 miles. I have 197,000 now. I have replaced one spring at a time from a local spring company that uses Ford templates.(authorized) None of the replacements have given any problems. One thing I noticed, the original springs are rusted as hell. Maybe thats the problem. I plan to buy new complete packs and keep the good springs as replacements.
I'd look in to the idea of bad shock absorbers. If they go bad you will feel more bounce in the springs than normal and this will put more stress on the springs.
I've had a front coil spring bust once cause of this bouncing. I did get lucky and it managed to lock itself together where i could drive it home for a repair.
At about 39,000 miles my 02 F350 SRW broke a left front leaf, of course Dealer said they had never seen a front leaf break, but also said that they had replaced several rear leafs on the Superduties. And mine dont have a bit of rust anywhere.I did the add a leaf deal soon after they replaced the broke spring, and no problems yet.
