Smile which oil to use

hello, i've only posted a couple times and never in the PSD section. i just bought an '03 7.3L and absolutely LOVE it. i don't know why i bought a gas truck before. i've been reading everything i can get my hands on to learn about these engines and how they run, maintenance, etc.

my question is this, what brand of oil is best to run?? i know i'll get some varying replies, but i want to do my own oil changes and will use the best i can. i run amsoil in my sleds with excellent results, and in my wifes WRX.
can i run it in my truck too?? and if so, what weight? 15-40?

thanks guys, looking forward to a long and happy relationship with the PSD!!

Welcome to the group here dude. I am sure you will get all sorts of response to your question here on this as well as other questions you will have in the future. You will see real quick here there is a lot of passion for the PSD's... After all they have brought a new sensation in trucks for most of us anyway. Real performance if you ask me. Good luck with her and enjoy the site here as the rest of us do.

Mobil One Delavac 5w-40 Synthetic Baby!!!!

Absolutly LOVE it, starts and runs like a champ when it is 0* out and stone cold. thats the main reason I went to the synthetic. switched it over at 200K and that was 7K ago. still runs great. just sent out the first oil analysis to Blackstone labs. we will find out soon just how good of an oil it is.

I use Mobile Delvac 1300 15-40 in both of my trucks. Bought both of them used and the former owner of both used this oil. I also use a Motorcraft oil filter that I get at AutoZone. Have had good results with this combnation so far. If I hadn't known what oil the former owner had been using, I probably would have went with Rottella. Easy to find and maybe alittle cheaper to buy.

What do you have for an air-filter set up? I got rid of my stock equiptment and put on the Ford AIS system. Would highly recommend it if you are in dusty conditions.

thanks for the info guys, i think i'm going to use the amsoil. i get a good price on it and after reading a bunch, it looks as good or better than the delvac by mobil. i'll run it and see how it goes. i don't think the truck has been using synthetic as i just bought it, but am going to switch it over this weekend.

to answer trakman, the truck is using the stock air filter setup currently. i think the only mods i plan are exhaust, filter, and a chip. don't know which yet, but am reading like crazy and learning all the time. i would prefer a chip that also does the tranny. if not, i'll get the valve to maintain pressure. truck is a daily driver and don't want to kill it, but would have fun with more power!!!

Any HDEO will work just fine, just make sure that it has the proper ratings.

You should tour FTE's own Oil and Lubrication Forum, there's alot of valuable testing data and knowledge free for the taking, not just opinions and sweet talk. Another good forum is www.bobistheoilguy.com.

This very question has been hashed over many times.

Smile Welcome

I have had the same positive experience the last couple years with my 02. I have been using Rotella every 3000 miles. I just switched to Delo this last time and it does seem a little smoother. I went to the Delo because it costs less than Rotella now at Sam's. However, now I have 2 gals of Rotella left and 2 gals of Delo. I have a question of my own: Is it ok to mix the two oils?

Technically you are supposed to be able to.

However, I'd just buy enough Rotella to use it up, it's not that expensive at walmart.
