PSD's and Synthetic test

So I was feeling rich earlier this week and went out and bought 4 gallons of mobil 5-40 synthetic motor oil, a new napa oil filter and I also changed the tranny fluid, and filter. when it was all said and done I was out almost $200!!!! that synthetic is EXPENSIVE.

But. I have heard that they run so much better on the synthetic verses dyno oil. so I did a little test.

Since we all now how our trucks run. I drove it to work all week, on thursday morning it was 5* at 5 in the morning when I left, now usually I would have used the block heater for a while, this time I didn't, no block heater, synthetic oil, and it fired right up, just like it was hot and had ran for hours. I was sold right there. on the dyno oil and no block heater at this temperature it would have to have been glow pluged twice and it still would have barely ran once it did start. I have also notice that it doesnt smoke a little blue smoke like it used to do, is this just because the synthetic is burning cleaner, or is it possible that the injector seals react well to the synthetic.

So to sum this up EVERY PSD should have synthetic in them, they run so much better.

Yes, Mobil 1 Delvac 5-40 is the best oil in the world. I let my truck sit for 5 days and it started on the first glow plug cycle without plugging in. It fired instantly and idled smooth with ZERO cold idle romp romp romp.

How often do you plan on changing it? Its -10 up here in NW MN and I just got done hauling a load of hay. The 15w40 is starting to get a little thick and I'm due for an oil change shortly. Normally I'd just switch to Delvac 10w30 but I'm thinking of switching to 5w40 and running it year round.

im runnning the amsoil diesel oil and wont switch back. like the other guys found easier startup, i saw a minor increase in fuel mileage, but i notice it runs better longer with dino performance would taper off. and im running a bypass filter and oil stays nice and clean now also.

Next change, I'm gonna bite the bullet and go synthetic. What kind of intervals am I looking at? Doing this every 3k could put me in the poor house. I do lots of highway miles, steady 2300 rpms.

With a bypass filter and regular oil analysis I see no reason why you cant leave the oil in for 9 to 12k miles, of course changing the filter every 3k and adding the diffrence.I have been doing this with my gassers for years without trouble.

I can't say where I quoted this from cuz I fergot the link, but I have read about guys going like 40,000. they just keep having the oil tested and as long as the numbers are good they keep running it. this was my plan anyway, change the filter every 5k and have the oil tested. the main reasons I did it were because of the ease on start up and that unlike dino oil, synthetic doesnt break down, that is why you can run it so long.

Question synthetic?

I have less than 4,000 miles on my diesel, is it too soon to start using the synthetic oil in my 7.3?

Yes it is too soon. Wait until you have at least 15k on it.

It is never too soon to run the synthetic oil. First oil change at 1000 miles and I would go synthetic. I go 5000 miles between oil changes with full synth. 6000-8000 when the miles are mostly highway. Easily 10k with all highway miles. Highway miles are the easiest on oil and the engine. Most of the wear on the motor is on startup. I have a pre-luber which gives me oil press. before I start my truck so wear on start is virtually nil. It also runs on shutdown to cool the turbo. And I still never shut the engine down above 300 deg. F to keep the oil from coking up a hot turbo.

At 4k miles, you are good to go,just make sure the first time around with the synthetic you change out all the oil and add a new filter at 3 to 4 k miles.Reason being the synthetic will flush out the remaining dino oil and any carbon that might be present.( In your case with the low miles you should have little or no carbon buildup.)My theory with the synthetic is the sooner the better.Just another thought,if you really did need a breakin period with the engine, then what happens to vehicles like Porsche,Corvette and Subaru that come with synthetic directly from the factory??

Kwik, while I admire the fact that you are one of the better mechanically educated people in this forum, I would not go so far as to claim that mobil Delvac-1 is the best. While I find it to be an excellent oil and has great low temperature characteristics, I would like to point out that there are other HDEO's with equal low temperature characteristics and equal or even sometimes better UOA numbers.

I've been following you guys for a few days. Starting to think maybe sythetic is the way to go. Hammer69, what oil is better? '97 250 - 180,000 miles, completly stock, runs like a new truck.

The hydrocracked are better than conventional oils, however they will not lower your operating temps nor will they give you the high temperature protection like a lab created synthetic. Just know what you are getting.

A court case back in the mid 80's where Mobil 1 sued Casteroil, because casterol was marking a futher refined dyno oil as synthetic, defined the term "synthetic" for advertising. Mobil 1 lost, and now all of these companies are marketing this dyno stuff as synthetic.
And here's the full thread:

From what I have been able to learn Mobil 1 starts off with a better foundation than the rest, hence a superior product.
