Low down on the low idle...
just after getting out of the ClicketyClack-ness of my oiling problems, a new one simulataneously has emerged, and I am at a loss of solutions...and even problems. Cold start up and idle are fine; around 650-700 RPM. but after some driving, idiling in drive gets down to 500 or so. What scares me more is that when idling so low, shifting into park sends it into a nose dive that it has to recover from. It'l dive down to 200 then bakc up to 6 and slowly come to a rest somewhere round 6. I replaced the IAC valve cuz I had some parts credit and reset the computer. The "idle stop screw" type thing has long since been messed with, so it's not in it's stock location, but adjusting that has come to no avail. The only thing this co-incides with is something the muffler guy pointed out to me. I had some work done and he let me hear this ticking that coming from the top of my tranny (AOD). Didn't think till tonight about a low fluid level or something little like that, and I will check, but even then, it would let the engine rev higher, not hinder it, right? The only other thing that would make the two related is that the tranny's going bad, I guess. This is also intermitent (the stalling) sometime shifting into park will just keep the low idle and some (one) time it stalled out on me. any ideas short of a tech?
Thank you.

Low down on the low idle...
I had as similar problem with my '93. It would stall if I was in a turn and the A/C kicked in(duty cycle). I finaly took the idle control valve off and found it was totally crudded up. I cleaned it out with carb cleaner until I could not blow through it with out it leaking and the problem was solved. I checked my timing the other day too and it was set to 5 degrees btdc with the spout off so I advanced it to 10 and it still idles at 750-800rpm although it has a bit of a miss at idle that I have not been able to cure yet. As far as the idle screw is concerned the computor will still try to compensate and set the idle itself. Clean the valve first and then try ajusting the screw a bit to see if it makes a difference. Be sure to wait a bit after you move the screw until the computor makes its ajustments to correct the idle mixture.
