5.4 Efficiency
To increase MPG, install a cat back aftermarket exhaust system, and electric fans. Gibson has a single outlet 3" set up. It took me 1.5 hours to completly install. Flex-A-Lite has electric fans that are specifically designed to fit. Increase tire pressure to the max on the tire sidewall. There are other things you can change but this is a good start.
A good percentage of fuel economy is in the right foot. Put a block under the gas pedal if you are prone to agressive starts.

Drive downhill alot
A cat-back exhaust makes your truck sound cool but unless you upgrade the whole system (Intake->Exhaust) you will probably be disappointed. I installed a cat-back system from Bullet about a year ago and have seen ZERO improvement in mpg. New intake and exhaust (headers and exhaust) will easily set you back $1K and net you another 2-3mpg, maybe. Now divide that money out and see how long it will take you to come out ahead.
5.4 Expeditions are not about saving gas. You should be seeing at least 14-16 mpg average (depending on your right foot).

If only we could drive our 5.4L expeditions and get 28 MPG...life would be good. I've only filled up my tank once. Today will be the second fill up. I wonder how what I am getting. I will be happy if it falls within the 14-16 range that everyone talks about.
p.s.
I removed the lead weight from my right foot right before buying my beast.

I bought mine used so I had little choice on the engine size. I spent the first year watching the mpg and was very disappointed. [12-13 normal every day / 14-15 trips]
I changed the filter to a K&N and thankfully my warranty covered the idle air module/sensor thing that went bad at the same time. opps. I was figuring the exhaust was next just as soon as this one wears out. So I stopped figuring the mpg and excepted the fact that its a thirsty beast.

I generally only see 11mpg. I use mobill 1 super syn 5w30 but besides that it is a stock 2003 xlt popular with the 5.4L and 4 wheel drive. I have seen as bad as 9.75 mpg in auto 4x4 mode in the winter. Best I have ever seen is probably only 14mpg. I don't know how some of you guys are getting so much better.
Granted I have a heavy foot and saving a few dollars on gas is not high on my priority list.

I have a 99 eb with near 100000miles. I have been able to get 17.8 on a trip but you need to keep it under 2000 rpm. Thats only 70 on the highway. At 78 it droped to 15.5 this was all on 400 mile trip to columbus and back to rochester last nov. I have since removed the stock fan and replaced it with a pair of fans from a 98 windstar. I used a fan control from Summit racing. I also installed a factory wing thing on the back I thought it might smooth out the air flow over the back. 4 new yokohamas and we were off to fla. To see MICKEY and check out the Daytona 500. Well the wing thing must have cost me anything I gained from the fans as "I have not seen anything close 17 MPG. It does seem more responsive. I will check it again in the spring after the summer gas arrives. I have not heard of anyone who has seen improvement with a air cleaner upgrade or exhaust upgrade except more noise from both. The Yokohamas HT-S were a great upgrade they ride great handles well and they are Quiet.

I noticed a distinct jump upward in gas mileage after replacing the spark plugs which were quite worn. I replaced them at about 165K miles and I don't know when or if they were previously replaced, having bought the truck at 127K miles.
Anyway the jump was from about 12.5 to about 13.8 in our daily driving, still disappointing, but I consider it a clear cause/effect: new plugs = more mpg.

I have a '98 EB w/68K mi, completely stock except a K&N air filter. I average about 11.9 mpg in winter and 13.5 summer (city driving). Trips avg about 17.5mpg if I keep it under 70. It still has the original spark plugs. I'm thinking about replacing them at 70k. What do you think?
