Hi, im trying to replace the lower hinge bolt on the drivers side door. the door sags and dosnt close properly. i ground off the top of the original bolt, and now i need to get it out. is there a trick to sliding the bolt out? i tried hammering it, and using vice grips and hitting down with the vice grips
If i unbolted the 4 bolts that hold the bottom hinge on, and took it out to work on it, would it do any damage to the top hinge if the whole door is supported by the top hinge?
You might tweak the top hinge by letting it hang like that. You could get a scrap piece of wood about 4 or 5" thick, take the bottom hinge off and wedge the wood where the hinge sits. The door won't be able to hang and it won't hurt the top hinge at all.
ok ill give it a try.. or worse comes to worse i'll have somebody hold the door when i take the hinge off, and hold it by the handle and close it while i do the repair.
I dont think the hinge will come off with the door attached, there are 3 bolts that look prety hard , bein hid by the door.. does this mean that i have to get the door off somehow?
i need to get the hinge pin out.. but i also need to drill the hinges for a larger bushing. i figured it would be easiest to remove the hinge, and do the repair work when its not in a crammed little corner behind the door. it looks like i cant get the hinge out without removing the door.. so bacicly, i need to get both out i belive.
I tried it once on my 85 Crown Vic. The plastic rollers were shot. Had to take the hinge off and support the door somehow. (long time ago) Then I had to take it to a body shop cause I could not get things to line up. When the hinge wore out on my 81 F-150 I bought new hinges and took it straight to the body shop. Did the same on a Celica for $25.00. I'll never try it again.
Ryan, I went to advance auto and got the pins for my 83 f-100.You get the pins and new bushings.I cut my old pins with a die grinder and a cut off wheel.I did have my son hold the door for me.It did take a little longer than I expected but I am pleased with the results.
Ok, I bought the bushings and pins on ebay. Took a die grinder, cuts the pins in two in the middle. Pushed part of the pin out the top, the other part out the bottom of the hinge, and put in the new pins and bushing. Easy job.
If you are having to drill out for your bushings, it sounds as if you have the wrong set.
Ryan, you shouldn't have to re-drill your hinges. If you get new hinge pins you also get the bushings. It should be just a remove and replace job. I've done this a half dozen times on 3-4 different vehicles. If you do one at a time you shouldn't have to even remove the door.
I ground the top of the hinge bolt out, if i could get the rest of it out i would be half way there. the kit i boght has 2 bushings that replace where the hinge wore out, and by the looks of it, i would have to drill that out so the bushing fits in there. maybe i can take some pics for ya.
