I am rebuilding my turbo and I am having problems getting the compressor wheel off.
I have tried using a screwdriver and vice grips with no luck on either. Using the vice grips I've scratched the crap out of the bolt on the exhaust side.
Does anyone have a technique or suggestion to get the wheel loose? I don't have access to air tools unfortunately.
I would say try an impact gun but you dont have air tools. Did you try a bigger vice grip where you would have a little more clamping force and leverage.
Thanks for the advice. I was actually going to call you Ron to see if you had some ideas. My vice grips keep slipping on the exhaust side and I was worried that scraping that nut would cause problems.
Well I was able to finally break the wheel free. So I start ratcheting away. The wheel gets about 2 inches away from the plate and it just keeps spinning there. I tripled check to make sure that the shaft wasn't spinning and it's not. I backed the wheel all the way down again and then brought it back up, and still the same. It seems to just keep spinning in place.
Anyone have any ideas? This stuff is supposed to be easy but I've been having no luck with this turbo. You'd think it would it would show a little more gratitude will all the new parts I bought for it.

If the wheel is 2 inches from the backplate, then it should come on off. grab wheel and pull off shaft. I am not trying to be a smart azz, it may just take a little oomph pull it off the shaft. If its 2 inches away there cant be any threads still holding it. the threded part of the wheel is at the outer end, and the rest is just a tube that the shaft goes through.
Don't worry about being a smart azz bdrummonds, I'm asking some pretty stupid questions. I'm just a little jumpy about working on a turbo, scared I might screw something up.
But I was able to finally get it off. I think that it has hung up on the last thread, so I applied a little more pressure behind the wheel with a screwdriver and it started backing off again. So now I got some PB blaster going to work to loosen up the exhaust housing from the shaft housing. Thanks for the help guys.
