I have the 18" aluminum wheels. I prefer to rotate 5 tires because I don't trust a tire much more than 5 years old so only rotating 4 makes the spare useless except in an emergincy. Having the spare broke down and mounted is kind of a pain although the local Goodyear dealer only charges the usual rate and I get the lifetime balancing the first time so there's no charge there.
I'm assuming an aluminum wheel would run in the $250 range and I could handle that just so I wouldn't have to make an appointment and could rotate at my leisure in my driveway. (I have the air tools). The question is would the aluminum wheel hold up being carried under the truck and maybe not washed regularly and become pitted and dull?
We had an 01 Durango before we got the Excursion and it had a full size matching spare. I loved the fact I could rotate it in with the others and squeeze a little more life out of the tire set. While it was filthy when removing it, all the grime washed off without any problems. If you wanted to get real nutty, you could clean and wax the rim before putting it back under there.
Les Schwabb in my area will rotate tires for free!!! I suppose they want customers to buy there so they will offer nice guy incentives like that. I tried to pay them but they wouldn't take the money. I usually buy my tires elsewhere (costco) due to good price and good brand name selection. I may consider Les Schwabb for my next set after rotating a few times just out of good faith.
Most tire stores will do free rotations with purchase of tires from their store. If they complain about being too frequent, you could always state that it is reccommended to do rotations on Super Duties every 5000 miles and they shouldn't argue. They would loose customers that way.
After working in tire shops for 7 years and presently managing 135 Government owned vehicles, I usually rotate my own vehicle either at 5k miles or every other oil change 6k which ever I happen to do at the time.
I keep a close watch on the tires but unless there's apparent wear I'll stretch it to 12-15,000 miles. Usually get around 60,000 out of a set of five. Sold my 95 F250 and had to put the second set (not counting originals) on at 125,000 three months before I sold.
