I have a 87 f-150 302 FI. This truck sat for about 3 years before I got my hands on it. I have replaced all fuel pumps and filters. I have not checked the fuel pressure on the rail but it is getting gas at the rail. It will turn over but not even try to start. It will cough if starter fluid is sprayed into the intake so I know that it is getting spark. What are the chances that the injectors are bad? I am not too familiar with FI. What else can I try before I invest in all new injectors? Also it is not sending any codes so I am assuming (wrong thing to do) that everything seems to be working as far as the computer knows.
If it sat for 3 years without running, it's likely the injectors are clogged. Make sure pressure is good first before doing anything else. Also, check for spark on several wires. Just because it "coughs" when you spray starter fluid, doesn't mean all the plug wires are firing. Be careful with the starter fluid as well. Starter fluid (ether) has been known to lock up engines. At the shop, we always use brake parts cleaner in the aerosol can to help with starting when needed.
We've has this problem at my shop before and used the following with good results. Buy some good Carb cleaner. Remove your injectors and soak the tips of them in the carb cleaner for an hour or so. Get some jumper wires and a 12 volt battery (car battery). Start touching the wires to the batt for a sec and releasing. Do this till you start to hear the injector(s) click (very light click sound, so listen carefully). This has worked for us on several occasions.
Thanks for the advice. I have heard about ether hurting an engine but I was desperate. I will make sure that it has spark all the way around. Is there a way to test if the injectors are getting the signal to fire? I will pull and clean them, not easy to get too, and see what happens. I have not checked the actual fuel pressure but will get a gage and see what it reads. What ever happened to the good old days where a screw driver and duct tape could make anything run?)
I did dump the old gas, what little there was. I pulled the number one plug and it is dry. I checked all the plugs and have spark all they way around. My guess is that it is the injectors. I have started to pull the intake but can someone please tell me how to get to the two bolts on the passenger side? I can not even see them without standing on my head and then can not get my hand, arm and wrench to them at the same time. Thinking of pulling motor, 175k, and switching for a carbed 351. Will solve most of my current issues.
