NAPA Evercraft service tools. P/N 775-9084 5/16" fuel line disconnect tool. $8.99 plus tax (this is the anodized aluminum one).

On and off in 2 minutes. Use golf tees to plug the lines while physically removing filter, dont shove them in too hard just enough to stem the flow, and the rubber nipples that come on a new filter to cap the lines on the outgoing filter. Remove the caps and drain filter into your lawnmower, outlet side to the mower of course

You may only use this tool every 18-24 months, but the headaches it saves are worth its weight in GOLD! My father in law had to buy a $65.00 fuel line after he wrestled and vise-gripped his old one off.

DOC Spanky...

One of the best and most descriptive posts I've received. Thanks. I love the golf tee idea and the use of existing parts from new components (nipples) is brilliant. I even love the lawnmower idea even though I don't have one anymore.

Thanks again.

I wanted to quality tool but local shop only had the little plastic snap-on package. The 5/16" worked fine and was cheap. I figured out that I could use the nipples off the new filter but I could have used the golf tee advice before starting ... fuel down the elbow.

Just so we all feel really secure in our manhood, the golf tee idea was actually given to me by my grandmother. Seems she had to pull my Grandfather out from under an older car after he drained gas into his eyes. She jokingly quipped it was the most useful thing he ever did with any of his golf equipment thereafter.

As to the descriptiveness, I like it that way. I wish more mechanically minded people would give directions like this. It would make many jobs much easier if someone would write the idiots guide to working on the Triton 5.4, a notoriously cramped and confusing piece, or your Ford Expedition for that matter. Too many of these jobs that the select few of us view as minor, turn into nightmarish pains in the **** because nobody told us the one magic trick of, FOR EXAMPLE, Use a torque wrench instead of a standard ratchet handle to work the belt tensioner as the extra length of the torque wrench is exponential in helping to get the belt off. I wrote another of these highly detailed job descriptions after I changed the alternator, and it was suggested that I be placed into the FTE hall of fame... Stille waiting on my Granatelli induction kit for that one.... hahahaha

As to the humor end, I have an Irish temper, and many is the wrench that has taken flight upon failure of a job to be "an easy 10 minute swap" as some of you mechanical superfiends are prone to saying. So I work to find the humor in as many things as possible for those times I wanna choke the guy at the parts house or start reading people profiles here trying to figure out where to go find them at...... Just kidding..

Filter same place as described in this thread, pump is in the tank. Would it start at all? Did you here the fuel pump pressurize?
