If it is for the '03 Expy in your sig...look on the frame rail on the driver's side. The fuel filter is located behind a black cover between the gas tank and the frame rail. It is near the rear passenger door.

Thats the correct location but there is some other things you need to know.

1. Fuel system is presureized and if it isnt bled down first you will get a face full when you remove the line.

2. You wont be able to remove it without a special tool that cost about $8. It is a circular sissors type clamp that goes around the fuel line and you have to slide it into the fuel filter to be able to remove the filter.

Help with bleeding fuel filter lines

Question: I am changing my fuel filter. I am reading about the clamp... seems like no big deal if I buy the tool but tell me how to "bleed" the system properly. Last thing I need is a face full of gas and air in my lines making the truck not start.

NOTE: I have a 99' expy 5.4.... where is the filter on this year model?

Fuel Filter is under the driver’s side, next to the frame rail. It's kind of in the middle of the two doors. On the fuel rail (can not remember what side) is a Schrader (sp?) valve. You can unscrew the black plastic cap, and press the pin and relieve pressure that way, or you can let the Expy sit for a couple of hours and most of the pressure will be relieved. You will get fuel leakage once you remove the lines, from both the lines and the filter, so have something to soak it up. Also I would suggest wearing goggles / glasses, and do not work directly under the filter when removing it, due to fuel leaking.

As a side note Fuel Filters are dirrectional, so note the dirrection of the old one (either by the arrow on the can, or where the "lip" is), and be sure to install the new one in the same position.

If you buy the scissor tool, buy the metal one not the plastic one.

Schreider Valve (SP?) (Fuel Filter)

Any tips on where to find the Schreider Valve? Near the filter?

I got up under the car and found the filter last night. Besides the clips needing special scissors, it looks like all you have to do is pop each end off and affix the lines to the new filter over the nipples then replace the clips. Is this "relatively" correct?

Also, after bleeding the lines and re-affixing the filter, does the lines re-pressurize themselves simply by starting the engine? The last thing I need is a vehicle that won't start but has a brand new fuel filter.

Thanks for you help.

The Schrader valve is on the fuel rails over the injectors. I do not remember what side its on though. But like I said you could just let it sit for a few then do it. As far as the fuel line disconnect tool, there is a "nub" end, this part slips into the fuel line and releases the spring clips that hold them on. So basically you just slip the tool over the tube on the filter and press it between the tube and the fuel line. Once you do that you can remove the fuel line.

When you put the new one in just reconnect the fuel lines and the retainer clips. Once you turn the ignition to "on" the fuel pump will pressurize the system, so I would not worry about "air" in the lines. Be sure to check and make sure you have no leaks.

Thanks for your input. I know I sound like a newbie but is the Schrader Valve under the hood near the "injectors" or is there another location that the injectors are... Example: Is it in close proximity to the Fuel Filter under the car near the doors or under the hood near the engine block?

thanks

They (one each side) are under the hood. They run on each side of the Plenum (upper intake area), above the injectors and COPs. So on top of the engine, under the hood. They are stainless steel, so they are shiny silver if the engine bay is somewhat clean. The schrader is located on the top of one of them. It has a black plastic cap on it with 2 flat sides, looks similar to a valve stem cap on a wheel, but with 2 flat sides. Remove the cap and gently press on the pin (much the same as letting air out of your valve stems on the wheel), but be careful as fuel will come out of there. Do it on a cool/cold engine also.

Fuel Filter - plastic tools

Thanks for all the info on this post, it totally helped while changing my fuel filter. I confess I did cheap out and get the plastic tools, and while the metal tool would have been good too, I wonder how easy it would have been to get it into the cramped space. The plastic tools are little round things that fit around the fuel line, make sure if you get them that the fat end is toward the filter and the thin end towards the fuel line, the thin side is the side that releases the pressure line.

Thanks for all the help on these boards, you guys are great.

Yep, thanks to all for info. The Chilton's manual doesn't do justice to this procedure, but it does mention raising the vehicle's front end so the filter is above tank level in order to avoid fuel siphoning out while changing the filter.

Thanks all!
