I have a 2003 F150 with a 5.4L V8. About a year ago I had a Flowmaster 40 put in and the rest of the pipes are the same. I gotta say that I'm not really pleased with it. While sitting in neutral it sounds great, but I'm looking for something that will be louder and deeper without losing any HP or Torque.
What exactly is your setup now?? You just took the stock muffler off and replaced it with a FM40? If this is the case.. I would either
a) cut two of the cats off(it should have 4) and then put 2 flowmaster single in/single out on the dual pipes-that would be loud while still giving you enough back pressure to support you with HP.
b)take the flowmaster or flowmasters off, i dont know how many you have on there. And just run your exhaust with 4 cats and straight pipe the rest of the way out.
Those are two good setups in my opinion, where you wouldn't lose HP or hurt your motor..that yet would still make your truck LOUD.
Please read a little about backpressure. No engine needs backpressure. Want backpressure? weld a plate ovet your tailpipe and drill a 1/4" hole for the exhaust to flow through. That should make your truck run real good It doesnt support HP, it kills it.
And straight pipes will NOT kill your "high end". Thats actually the first time I have ever heard that. Usually people claim it would kill low end torque, which it really doesnt, or so little that you would not notice. Depends on pipe size. Go check out some dyno plots on any engine you can find on the net. There are thousands, and they will show you proof on either account. Neither will "hurt" the motor either.
Deeper- place the mufflers as far foward as possible. The more pipe after the mufflers, the deeper the sound will be.
Also you can use larger pipe after the mufflers. That really deepens the tone. Dont go stupid on size, and exhaust velocity will not be hurt. A size or 2 bigger is all you need.
Louder- Cut the rear cats off. Get headers. Both will do the job.
Flowmaster seems to be what everyone likes around here. If you dont like the Flowmaster then try a different name. But one bit of advice ill give ya is dont go with Magnaflows. Whatever you do let me know how things go with it.
