Steering column bearings

Has anyone ever had to do steering column bearings on a 98 f150 automatic with tilt.
I had it apart today and where the spring and snap ring are theres what looks to be a spring seat that had worn into the shaft and could not get it off there was so much pressure on the spring the wheel was hard to turn and the spring was grinding against the snap ring i put it back together with the snap ring looser then it was and it steers fine now but i still have up and down play.its still not put together right but i dont think it was before either. now its driveable at least.
I was told that the 98 was bad for worn shafts. So should i even bother to do the bearings or should i get a used column. I think i will have to do all the bearings it looks like 3 from my diagram. How hard are they to do?
