Follow the directions that came with your cam or in the engine rebuilding section of your service manual for setting lifter preload. If the tip of the rocker does not traverse the middle of the valve stem a different length pushrod may be needed.
You can make a pushrod checker from an old pushrod that is not worn too badly and a section of threaded rod. You can also buy them from parts stores etc.
Sorry I do not have a listing for the standard length pushrod for the 351M/400. Apparently they are also available in 0.060" over and undersized. A new pushrod will measure about 0.025" shorter than the marked or reference length due to the hole drilled thru the ends. You may be able to measure a new pushrod at the machine shop or parts store.

Woops!!!! sorry about that reply I thought you were someone else that I tryed to explain it too. You will need a adjustable push rod & valve checking springs. I made A adjustable push rod out of a old one. Cut a chunk out of it and thread it. Put it in the motor and adjust it until you get the rocker tip to sweep the valve tip evenly. Looking at it from the front of the motor, The rocker should start in a little from the top of the valve tip and end a little before the bottom of it. Once you get it right, remove it & measure, then add the recomended preload to the measurement. Crane makes a kit for it but I've never seen it so I can't say if it's worth the money.
