i just got this 88 f150 4spd. the PO broke the ign rod in the column. so he screwed the ign switch to the bottom of the dash and you have to slide it to start it and turn it off. i want to put a push button to start it and a toggle switch to turn on the accessories and use it to turn the truck off. anyone got a diagram or info on how to do this? thanks!
Probably the ign actuator broke in the column. Under $10 from most parts stores and a couple of hours to fit so why not return it to stock?
Hope fully someone will be along with a wiring diagram soon.
If memory serves......
Use this idea as a test.1) Get a wire that will reach from the starter to the positive of the battery.2)Connect the wire to the small lug of the starter.3) put truck in park or neutral. Do not run over ***yourself***4) Touch the other end of wire to + battery, starter should engage and crank the engine over.
If that worked...
Install a heavy duty push button switch to the dash. Run a fused wire from the + battery to the switch. Run another wire from the switch to the starter. Push the button to crank the engine.
if it was my truck, i would spend the $13 and fix it properly, or just change the column.
once you get done doing it your way, you will have screwed up the wiring in the truck so bad it will never work properly again.
Second tjc's post on just return it to stock. Sure it would look cool making it work that way, but if you had to figure out what went wrong when you try to start it would be a PIA figuring out why the computer doesnt run the motor.
If you still insist on going this course; Haynes has a diagram in the back of it, a ford shop manual has it, but not sure about chiltons.
