Hello, I think I might have a bent push rod, I have the valve cover and oil rail off but it's real hard to tell if the push rods are straight by just spinning them. Is it possible to remove the push rods without loosening head stud/bolt and if so would you please tell me how? Thank you for any and all replies.
cant you loosen the rockers and lift them out, then pull the push rods out?.i've never done it on a 6l but have done it on everything from a slant six to a c-15 cat.spinning them probably wont show you which one is bent.
Ford has a special tool that is used in place of the injector to push down on the valve bridges to allow you to disassembled the rocker arm carrier and remove the push rod. Since you don't have that you will have to remove the head bolt to remove the carrier since it goes through it. Just tighten it back down to 85ft lbs and 3 sets of 90 degrees and you should be ok.

I wouldnt recomend this. you would be compromising the gasket when you lossen the bolt. I know it can and has been done since you are only taking one bolt out at a time, but in my opion if it were my truck I wouldnt want to take that chance. the rockers are held in with little plastic clips just leave the carrier bolted down and remove the individual rockers till you find the bent one. If you break one of those clips its no big deal I broke one when I did my head job and got a new one at ford for like $3 or something. oh and be careful there is a little ball that the rocker pivots on so dont drop that down in the head when you take it off.
I'm not going to loosen the studs. I'm going to try and make some kind of tool/jig that I can hold the valves down with. Do you know if that ball will stick to a magnet?
I think it will but I can find out for sure when I get back home but that won't be till Thursday. If you haven't done it by then I can check with the spare stuff I have at the house, but I think it is magnetic.
