Went to see a `97 Explorer, thinking of buying it. Took a drive. First problem was the 4wd selector **** was broken and light on dash said it was in 4L. Using grips managed to turn switch to "automatic" position and light went out. Then drove OK untill I was reversing when there was a thump from the rear susp.- looked but could see nothing wrong. Is there a transfer case problem? What do you think?
Thanks.
From what you say its most liley the front end comming out of four wheel when you are backing up mine did some thing like only mine did it when I came to a stop and it would come out I hade te transfer case rebut and took the problem away hope this helps
No the front end is always in as far as I know and it should never come out its controled my clutches and other stuff that I dont really understand yet and when it comes out that means that either on of two things are happening the case is worn so badly that its letting itself come out or the clutches in the case are worn and not hold properly. all this makes the auto function possible that way there are no hubs to engage and the transfer case controls the front end completly any thing else I can help with the let me know
