Angry 2000 explorer transfer case shot.

After checking this, and changing that, and a trip to my local Ford service dept. with my 2000 explorer, I have resigned myself to the fact that my transfer case is shot. I bought a used one, putting it in this weekend. Anyone have any tips or suggestions that might help?

Crawl under the truck TODAY, and hit the ujoint bolts with PB Blaster or some other one of your favorite penetrating oils. Let it work overnight before attempting to remove them.

The front shaft uses Torx capscrews and thread locker. It is very easy to strip out the Torx heads when you try to remove the bolts in order to pull the shafts and then remove the transfer case.

If you are inclined to change any fluids while you are under there, do not try to remove the cover on the front differential, thinking that you will drain the fluid the same way you do the rear differential. You cannot remove the front cover completely unless you remove all three of the front drive axle mounting bolts and jack it out of the way with a trans jack. But you have to remove it completely in order to clean the faces, once you break the silicone seal that was used as a gasket. If you want to change the fluid, use a suction gun to slurp out the old fluid.

Be sure to match mark the transfer case drive flanges for the front and rear propeller shafts before you take the bolts off.

This goes a lot easier with a car hoist and a trans jack or hydraulic cart.

Thumbs up Torx screws

Thanks alot for the advice, I'll heed every word. Would my local auto parts store carry the tool I need to remove the Torx screws? I'll post a reply to let you know how I made out.

I have a set of 3/8 square drive Torx bits that I bought at Home Depot. I think the U Joints use a T40, but I'm not positive on that.
