I parted out an Explorer and I have the transfer case ready to sell, but I don't know how to describe it because I don't know how many different kinds of transfer cases came on a 97 Explorer.

I know it's a Borg Warner, I can see that stamped into the case. Does anyone know if Ford had more than one type of BW transfer case that would have gone on a 97? Or anyone know a model number or where to look? Thanks!

 

Have you looked under the caked-on dirt for a decal? If one isn't present, the next thing I would do is check out the Ranger Station. They have a tech section for driveline components and they might have a description of how to ID your transfer case. If no luck there, google "Explorer transfer case identification" or other similar phrase. Sometimes, the companies that sell transfer case and transmission parts will help identify what you have, either via their web site or with a phone call.
