MANUAL all the way. With auto's you have to drive back and forth aprox. 20' to have them engage/dissengage. If you are stuck this is impossable and no guarantee they will engage. Manuals are almost instantly engaged. I have yet to have mine not engage right away or dissengage for that matter.

it used to go in 4x4 low before i heard the pop 2-3 times from the front passenger tire. after 3rd pop i heard the tcase shift out of 4x4 and went in to 2wd mode. since then it acts like it is in 4x4 mode with the light but it does not engage the front end. but i diffently heard the front passenger tire pop.

thats why i am thinking that the hubs might be dead. as it used to go into 4x4 and 4x4 low with out problems

I'm will almost every one else on this forum, get a set of Warn premiums, If you think the auto are dead, odds are there dead ! And even if you can't put them in yourself, the total cost is about $300.00 installed, call a Ford dealer and see what new auto hubs cost with out install ! Save your old Manuals because you can sell them on ebay !
CT was brutal this year with snow and icy crap, manual hubs worked like a charm, lock them in the morning and engage them when you need 4x4 later in the day

ne got hammerd this year i live in nh. tuesdays storm was a **** on the roads. all slush, snow & ice all in one. the tcase engaged i felt & heard it engage or try to into 4x4 high. it wouldn't go into 4x4low. this afternoon when i get home from school or get to a friends house i will see if the driveshaft in the front spins freely when 4x4 is disabled and not when it is. i am hoping that is the prob. when i get some money i will invest in 2 new warn premium manual hubs for it. as if we get more snow or when it all melts and mud season starts i'll need it in northern ny were my sister lives.

so enganging 4x4 and not moving the vehicle i should be able to spin the front driveshaft a few times and hear a clicking sound if the auto hubs engage.
but engageing the manuals before i leave in the morning wont have any adverse effects on the front axle.

okay the auto hubs do not want to stay engaged. i get it in then go a couple a feet then it diseggages. or it will randomly slip in and out of power for the front wheels. when when it reengages it grinds then catches. so i am thinking that the hubs are definetly the problem.

yea once i get some money about $100.- for the hubs and shipping. i will put the new hubs in. now will it do any damage to the front end or more damage to the 4x4 components? as i am hoping to get the parts before mud season kicks in full gear up here. with the current weather that problely wont be until april

how hard is it to change the hubs? just remove the 6 hex screws along with the tires and it should pull right off? or what.

go to a local auto parts store, usually they can get these for you and save you shipping costs.
