Engine Doesn't Stop when Turned Off
i've been having some problems recently with my '80 f-150 4x4. it's got a 400 and i've set the idle higher than normal to keep it from dying every time i come to a stop sign or light. now when ever i park and shut the engine off it continues to sputter for a few seconds and then dies out. what is the problem here? the idle is around 900-1000 in drive. but once i put it in park or neutral the rpm's go way up like if it was warming up in the morning. any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. thanks.

it is sputtering "Dieseling" after you turn it off because the idle is set way too high. I agree check with the timing and get it set properly. should be around 8 to 10 degress BTDC and invest in soime good carb cleaner and clean it out some also. and check for vaccum leaks to make it idle at the correct RPM Good luck and Godbless
