idle issues

rebuilt FE 390, rebuilt holley 4160, new everything. parked it runs just fine, i spike the throttle rpm goes up, down below idle and returns to idle. but when I'm driving if i have been driving down the road say 45ish in 4th gear if i clutch and coast to the stop light the truck dies. but if i ride the gear and "engine break" up to the light no problems, I've checked the fuel bowl level and its right at the bottom of the screw hole, both front and back.

Any ideas?

A little rocking to get fuel out is fine.

After the carb rebuild, did you re-tune/adjust it when you put it back on? Tune it with a vacuum gauge?

With a stick, you'd like to see 550 - 650 RPM at idle.

i am beginning to think that my engine is flooding, the last time it died it wouldn't start right back up, at first i thought it was a dead battery, barley would turn over. i pushed it out of traffic and waited a few minutes then it started right up. i have been noticing in the last few days it smells like gas more than usual. also i have been having to hold the skinny pedal down all the way to get the motor to start recently

i was stupid and didn't replace the floats when i rebuilt the carb. i think I'm going to do that this weekend and see how it goes. i have a holley 4160. it had one plastic and one metal float. do i need to match them or can i get two of the same, and if so which is the better one to go with

Apparently my rear bowl needs the plastic one for clearance reasons

I think the rear float is the problem, it's flacking all over, but it still floated in a cup of fuel. If it's not this the only thing I can think of is fuel pressure. The new fuel pump I bought says it outs out 8 psi and I keep reading that holleys like 5-6 psi

There's also supposed to be an "Idle Dampener" on that Carb.
To keep the engine from dying.
It looks like a little solenoid with a Rubber boot on it.

If there was an idle dampener on the carb it was gone before me. But I replaced the rear float and it seems to driving better now. But I think I still need to look into how much pressure my pumps putting out

I believe the dashpot on this carb serves as the dampener. Should be one on there. Keeps the throttle plate from slamming shut and stalling the motor.
