The same sorta thing happened to me the other week. I went to check my timing because my engine was running rough and I found that my timing plug was unpluged.
Yea I have done the same. With my yota. I replaced the plugs 4 or 5 times, replaced the wires, rotor, cap, dissassembled the carb, pulled the fan and radiator to remove the water pump so I could get to the timing chain, pulled the distributer to check it out, and it was the darned points. I also replaced the condenser twice. and the coil. The problem with the points was that the base inside was crappy and even though you could tighten down the screws after setting the dwell, it would move on me. Everything inside was wore out loose. and if you got it tight, it vibrated loose. I put a bigger bolt in and walla. It hasn't ran in 8 or 9 months due to the steering joint at the axle end, its not a kingpin or balljoints, oldschool, but its locked tight. Wont take grease and not sure if from repeated water crossings, or just old grease. After I get farther along with my other projects I will Heat the joint up, and break it loose. I mean picture this, My 2.5 ton 78 chevy with chain attached to the steering knuckle arm and dragging my yota by the arm. AND IT DIDNT TURN THE STEERING COMPONENTs... The yota weighs at least 7 to 8 thousand. Due to all the custom hillbilly construction I did in the past to it. But yea, I know what ya mean.
