I have a '95 xtracab bauer edition, I have noticed latey that whe I first pull away from a stop or when I use reverse, it feels like I am riding on rough pavement for a moment. Kind of a vibration that ceases as I get up to speed. Any ideas why this is happening? I recently towed a trailer about 2500 miles.
What motor and trans do you have??? Is it a auto or manual trans.???
Have you done a tune up lately ????
Have you checked the U-joints????
Possible unbalanced tire....
thanks for the quick reply...I have a v8 5.0 3speed automatic w/pushbutton overdrive. the problem does not seem to be motor related, I feel the vibrations in the bavck end.. and it doesnt do it allthe time. I did recently have new tires put on, but if they were out of balance wouldnt I feel it all the time? U- joints may be the issue, anyone else have a similar experience?
If in fact it's an E4OD it's about $1,500.00 to have Ford do it. If you replace the converter yourself and have the tools (basically common hand tools) and a tranny jack, it will be whatever the cost of the converter is. Take it by a national transmission chain and have it evaluated at no cost to verify though.
the fluid deteriorates and it is worth draining the fluid, torgue convertor, flushing if possible, new filter and new fluid. you have what is called transmission shudder. one of the auto tranny fluids says it will help with transmission shudder but i cannot remember right now which one.
If you do the fluid/filter change you just might buy some time and it might be quite a bit. Make sure to flush th system if you're going to do it, it's worth it. Quicklook2 is right on as to there being some fluids and addatives that address shudder. Make sure to run the correct grade fluid in the E4OD to avoid other issues. Good luck.

Greetings,
I have the same truck except mine's an XLT with a 351. HOWEVER, I've tried to locate that problem for years. I bought mine new, so the problem has been there since day 1. Never gotten worse. I HAVE found, however that the shimmy that you talk about is worse whenever I'm loaded down in the bed. Also, around 65,000 miles I replaced the midship bearing on the driveshaft. This eliminated the problem for about 10,000 miles, then the problem was back. I wonder if the entire driveline angle is just on the extreme end of the factory spec. This might cause this problem. I personally don't believe that your problem is the torque converter (if it feels like the freeway warning strips, then it might be). If a shimmy, then you might have an issue with the midship bearing. Also, see if it is worse when loaded. Hope this helps.
If the shudder happens in reverse, it is not torque converter shudder. E4OD torque converter shudder is due to slippage of the lockup clutch, but the computer does not engage the TC lockup clutch in reverse.
I second the vote for U-joints. Recently, I had my truck on the lift to work on something else, and found one of the u-joint crosses had dried up and turned all the needle bearings into powder. There was almost 20 degrees of slop in the single piece shaft. It don't know why it worked as long as it did.
Your X-tra cab probably has a two-piece shaft with a center bearing. Lots of joints to wear out, shafts to bend, etc. Block the wheels, put her in neutral, crawl under there, and start trying to turn each section of the shaft back and forth against the resistance of wheels.
I'm not sure that the washboard effect is anything I've ever felt with u-joints, though the reverse issue does tend to negate a TC shudder problem. Check the u-joints as well as the rear transmission mount. The washboard feel is a dead give away for shudder, I wonder if you may have a combination of problems. I'd still try the trans. flush and anti-shudder fluid, but certainly check the u-joints, transmission mount, and midship bearing. fefarms, could it be the clutch packs in the rear end? He had just towed a trailer 2,500 miles, how heavy, I don't know.
